Barkulanhub and Silicon Nomads collaborated on Somaliland’s Inaugural Hackathon: Lander Hack 2021

On February 18, 2021, Barkulanhub, in partnership with Silicon Nomads, successfully collaborated on Somaliland’s first-ever hackathon, aptly named Lander Hack. This landmark event brought together young innovators from across the region to harness technology in addressing local challenges, marking a significant step forward in Somaliland’s burgeoning tech ecosystem.

About Lander Hackathon

Lander Hack 2021 was designed as a platform to encourage collaboration among IT students, software developers, and tech professionals. The primary focus of the hackathon was to develop a Blood Bank Application, aimed at addressing critical healthcare needs in the Hargeisa Group Hospital. Beyond the technical challenge, participants were given the opportunity to enhance their skills in communication, teamwork, product development, and pitching.

Key Objectives:

  1. Development of a Blood Bank Application to meet community healthcare needs.
  2. Fostering collaboration among IT students, developers, and tech professionals.
  3. Building essential skills in communication, teamwork, product development, and pitching.
  4. Encouraging innovation by solving real-world problems through technology.
  5. Recognizing top talent by awarding prizes to the best-performing teams.

Event Details:

  • Participants: 30 individuals, divided into 5 teams of 6 members each.
  • Format: Teams were tasked with creating innovative tech solutions—primarily web and mobile applications—aimed at addressing the challenge of managing blood donations.
  • Focus Areas: The hackathon emphasized real-world problem-solving, collaborative learning, and product innovation.

Winners and Prizes:

Out of the five participating teams, the top three were recognized for their outstanding solutions. A total prize pool of $3,000 was distributed among the winners, with each group receiving a share based on their final ranking. The winning teams not only demonstrated technical excellence but also showcased a deep understanding of teamwork and innovation.

Impact:

The Lander Hack 2021 set a new standard for tech-driven collaboration in Somaliland. It provided a platform for young developers to work on meaningful projects that address pressing societal issues while nurturing the next generation of tech leaders. Also, about half a dozen participants were employed on the spot. The event also laid the groundwork for future hackathons and tech events, positioning Hargeisa as an emerging hub for technology and innovation.

By bringing together bright minds from across the tech community, Barkulanhub, Silicon Nomads and others such as Harhub, Som Digital, FikrCamp, etc have underscored the importance of technology in solving local challenges and are paving the way for a more innovative future in Somaliland.
